As most of you know, locating a truly old and authentically-used Mendi shield from the Southern Highlands is increasingly difficult. Was fortunate to find this one in Germany a few weeks ago. The colors are bold and layered from repeated paintings. There are a number of old arrow tips embedded in the front from repeated battles. Please note the fine pecked design at the top and bottom sections of the shield. The backside is magnificent with early pre-contact adze scalloping. There is a heft, weight and solidity to the shield that reinforces its defensive purpose. The shield dates to the early 20th century, is 46 3/8” (118 cm) in height and the price is available upon request. Questions?
