It is rare to find such a large Abelam yam mask so tightly constructed. It is of classic leaf-shape form with a sharp wedge nose often found in the Southern Abelam area known as the Wosera. The remains of paint is very beautiful and is surprisingly painted on the reverse as well. Because paint was considered a magical substance for the Abelam the extra application only makes the yam mask that much more powerful. Remember yam masks honored the ancestral spirits that enabled the long yam to grow to such massive size. This yam mask dates to the early/mid 20th century, is 25 ¾” (65.4 cm) in height and sells for $2,200. Questions?
