This elegant piece comes from the Massim area-the islands of Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province. Here on ceremonial Kula trading canoes this piece would have been mounted fore and aft in front of the athwart ships mounted splash board. This piece has beautiful, intricate scrollwork with several embedded frigate birds in classic Massim style. The piece is well weathered from years of use and some old insect damage along the perimeter. The piece is 40" in length and 34" in height, comes mounted on a custom display stand. sold
