This is a fine 19th century Maori taiaha staff. The top is both deeply carved and distinctly figurative with a toothy grin and shell eyes. There are a number of old inventory numbers and mostly illegible labels affixed to the bottom—one seems to say "Fortess" which makes sense as the Fortess family I’m sure had a number of these over the years. This one is 55 ¼" (140.4 cm) in height and dates to the mid 19th century. sold
