While this Sepik Coastal, New Guinea, mask obviously has little or no field use it is exceptional for its extraordinary early collection date—1886. The long, sharp nose, half-moon eyes and band of curvilinear design all mark this as coming from the north coast of New Guinea. The reverse is a light-colored wood with the inventory number "6435" stamped in black ink and a small white tag with the wording " Js Bertrand W. Gilbert Godefroy 1886." The mask is 12 ¼" (31 cm) in height. sold
