Oceanic Art - New Items John Down's Photographs                    Back to New Items

John Downs was an American engineer with the American Army during WWII who spent time in Australia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. This month's selection of items all come from the collection Downs formed in 1943/44. All of these pieces were also on long-term loan to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in the 1960s. A number of the photos in the Downs Collection are from Michael Leahy's trips to the New Guinea Highlands that were "first contact" images. How Downs came into possession of these images is a mystery I am trying to figure out.
