While the ritual-growing and public display of long yams is well known among the Abelam it also occurs on a limited basis with their eastern neighbors the Yangoru Boiken. This fine small mask would have adorned just such a long yam in the Yangoru area. It is finely carved with a refined thinness with a superbly painted face in the classic Yangoru style. The mask comes from an old Los Angeles collection, dates to the early/mid 20th century and is 17 5/8" (44.8 cm) in height. sold
