This is an old and rare Sawos culture, New Guinea, wooden dance ornament. I assume this would have been part of a large fiber costume. This section is pre-contact and stone-carved with a very nice zoomorphic face. The patina is excellent and thick with age. The item comes form the collection of John and Marcia Friede of Rye, New York, dates to the late 19th/early 20th century, and is 16 ½" (42 cm) in length. sold
