This superb shield comes from the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Using the excellent "Shields of Melanesia" book edited by Barry Craig and Harry Beran as a guide this shield closely resembles one owned by Elizabeth Pryce that was collected by Peter Halinan east of Kainantu (Fig. 5.34 page 148). The present shield is exceptional for both its obvious age, bold graphic design and the grip of arrows still present on the reverse. The patina on the reverse is smooth, black and glossy in places. There are numerous arrow tips embedded in the front as well. The shield is 57 1/2" (146.5 cm) in height and dates to the early 20th century. sold
