Oceanic Art - Miscellaneous Enlargement

This ancient drum comes from the Purari Delta area of the Papuan Gulf. It is stone-carved, pre-contact and has ancestral faces carved in deep relief on each side of the flared open mouth of the drum. Usually the older the drum the deeper and clearer the motif is carved. There is a stable age crack going up one side of the drum. The monitor lizard skin tympanum is intact but has a few holes. The piece is 28 ½" in height. sold
