Oceanic Art - Plaited Enlargement

These three ancient yam masks come from the far Eastern Abelam area where it borders both the West Yangoru and the Bukie culture (formally Margaret Mead's "Plains Arapesh.") Here in this unique confluence area of three cultures long yams are grown and displayed in the classic Abelam way with a woven mask adorning the yam - turning the yam into an ancestral spirit to acknowledge and honor that spirit's role in growing the yam. These three are owl-like and of a similar but much smaller version of the baba helmet mask. Each has layers of pigments and a stiff, thick patination from generations of use. All are individually mounted on custom display stands. sold
