Oceanic Art - Figure Enlargement

This small mask comes from the coastal area between the Sepik and Ramu Rivers in Papua New Guinea. Such small masks served more as amulets and were often attached to or kept inside of small string bags carried around my men. This mask is a very early piece collected by Allen Turner in the 1920 when he was sent to train the Royal Papuan Constabulary after WWI. Turner was in the Eigth Light Horse Brigade during WWI. The mask has a nice aged patina with remains of bright red pigmentation. The mask is 9 ½" in height, is mounted on a custom display stand. sold
