Oceanic Art - Miscellaneous Enlargement

This large gope board comes from the Kerewa area of the Papuan Gulf. It is the sister to a piece published in the "Seized Collection", a catalog put out by the Papua New Guinea National Museum in 1975 (ill. #1). The two pieces were carved by the last great carver on Goaribari Island between the world wars-thus the piece dates to the 1920/30s. The gope is 67" in height, 16 ½" wide and just over ½" thick. The reverse shows nice broad adze marks and an aged patina. The piece is not yet mounted. sold
