Oceanic Art - Miscellaneous Enlargement

This striking and unusual piece is an abstract one-legged figure from the Guam River area that lies to the east of the Middle Ramu River. Here the ancestral carvings are often used in male initiation by older men to "kick" the young initiates in the back (Smidt1990). Of the few that I have seen most are of the Kominimung type with diamond-shaped eyes and chevron motifs on the forehead. This one is very unusual with the opposed hooks and white and black color scheme. The piece shows good age with a brown patina and layers of pigments. The figure is 47" tall, comes with a custom display mount. sold
