Oceanic Art - Figures Enlargement

This stylized Abelam figure is pre-contact and from the eastern Abelam area towards Yangoru. Here the ancestral figures are carved with series of opposing hooks reminiscent of the Karawari cave figures. This piece has some old erosion on the forehead but the piece is carved from a dense hardwood and is strong and stable. Notice the deeply carved out nasal septum and the deep recess on the back of the head-both of these are characteristics of the earliest form of Abelam figurative carving. The piece was exhibited in the "Art Oceanien" exhibition at Neuchatel, Switzerland in 1970. This piece is 30" tall, comes mounted on a custom display stand. sold
