Oceanic Art - Mask Enlargement

This is a very nice, very old Inland Turubu area (Sepik Coastal) Barak mask. Such masks and the bush spirits they represented aided in hunting and warfare. This one is predominantly black with just the barest traces of red pigments. The piece is pre-1930 and shows signs of shell scraping on the reverse-an early way of smoothing the surface of the wood after carving. The piece is 18 ½" in height, comes with a custom display mount. sold
