Art of the Massim & Collingwood Bay is the extensive catalog that was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name held at my San Francisco loft/gallery in February 2009. The 272 page catalog was written with the help of my colleague Richard Aldridge and has 174 color plates illustrating 280 objects and nine field photographs from these two regions of Papua New Guinea. The book is divided into two sections—Massim and Collingwood Bay. While the art from the Massim area has been well documented elsewhere we have tried to illustrate a wide and comprehensive range of art objects not often seen in these previous publications. With the section on Collingwood Bay the book offers the first real significant look at the enigmatic art from this remote and under-represented area of New Guinea. The book is first and foremost an exhibition catalog but Richard and I have tried to include as much ethnographic insight as possible in the object’s descriptions.
