Oceanic Art - Miscellaneous Enlargement

This striking wooden plate comes from the Boiken people living on the southern slopes of the eastern section of the Prince Alexander Mountains. Such dishes could be either ceremonial or utilitarian. What sets this plate above others of this type is that it is pre-contact and has a wonderful zoomorphic figure on the plate's reverse. The figure appears to be part man and part manta ray. The plate has a twisted cane handle and there is an old crack coming in from the rim that is both stable and very common with Boiken plates. The piece is 20 ½" in diameter. sold
