This rare shield comes from the area between the Lower Ramu and Keram Rivers in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. While this shield comes from the John Rix collection I have field collected a similar example in Gotko Village in the grassy plains between the two rivers. This example is a good old one, metal-carved but quite old as evidenced by the crater-like holes where the rope handle would have been strung. The shield is 52 1/2" in height, dates to the early 20^th century. sold
