Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement
This type of object was used by men on the Schouten Islands, probably even Manam Island, atop the head, with the hair pulled through the center and out the top. This example is one of the earliest I have seen as it was collected by Martin Voigt in 1902 and later sold by Christies London in 1997 to Leo Fortess. The piece is tightly woven cane with red/orange bird feathers around the base. It is 9 ½" in height. sold
