This unusual piece is the top fiber section from a Yangoru Boiken "talipoon" bride price payment. Missing is the large green turban sea shell that would have acted as the base. This coiled cane portion is extremely rare for its decidedly abstract and non-figurative design. The vast majority of such two-dimensional ones such as this have the faces of ancestral or bush spirits portrayed on the front. Out of the hundreds that I have seen and collected this is one of three pure abstract ones that I have come across. It is 14" in height, dates to the early/mid 20th century and sells for $700.
