This old figure is one end of a "garamut" slit gong drum from the mouth of the Sepik River. Here, when garamuts get old and the sides are beaten through the figurative ends are cut off and kept as heirlooms. This fragment has all the traits of a very early garamut figure-the ears and nose are pierced, it is carved from a dense hardwood and the patina is smooth and worn. The fragment is 13 ¼" in height and sells for $2400.Questions?
