This small wood dish comes from the Boiken culture that lives on coast northwest of the mouth of the Sepik River. The plate is unusual for its diminutive size and the well composed ancestral figure attached to the top. The figure has the large head and long nose classic to the coastal area. The plate comes from the Fortess Collection of Hawaii, the white paper tag accompanying the piece states "Mark Lissauer # 76-18778" on one side and "Child feeding dish, Koil Island" on the other. The piece is 11" in height, dates to around 1920 and sells for $1500. Questions?
