Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement
This is a large, old and impressive Abelam yam mask. It is tightly constructed with an unusual form and composition, The sharp crest between the eyes has some nice open-work, the flat headdress behind the head is very tall with a pleasing, slightly undulating form. There is a small tuft of cassowary feathers at the base of the headdress section. The yam mask is 25" in length, dates to around 1930, has good remains of traditional pigments. sold
