This classic Abelam figure comes from the area near West Yangoru. It is carved from a dense hardwood and has the classic nggwal form with two hornbills above the head (both broken off), the hornbill beak under the chin, the hands at the waist and the legs bent backwards from the knee. As with many large and old Abelam figures the reverse has been scooped out to make the piece nearly hollow-and still heavy at that. The figure is 87" in height and sells for $6500.
