Oceanic Art - Miscellaneous Enlargement

This pre-contact piece is a stone adze from the coastal mountain area once known as "Mountain Arapesh" by Margaret Mead. Here, where the eastern edge of the Prince Alexander Mountains begins to taper into the Pacific Ocean the people had old, figurative adzes. This one is very fine with two delicate janus faces and incised motifs. There is significant old erosion on the mid section of the handle but the piece is still strong and stable. The piece is 20" stem to stern, comes mounted on a custom display stand. sold
