This striking mask probably comes from the coastal Ramu River area or from Manam Island off the coast. It has the classic long curved nose of ancestral masks from the region. The primarily white pigmentation is very unusual but is over a base of the more traditional red ochre. The mask has a sticker from Christies auction house on the reverse with their bar code but the relevant information about sale number and date are incomplete. The mask is 26 ¼" in height, dates to the 1930s, has a small 3" slice off the side that obviously had been broken off and re-glued at some point. sold
