This ancient and elegant drum comes from Kinipo Village, Purari Delta area of the Papuan Gulf. It was carved by Ove Evo-o around 1917 and purchased from his grandson Aivo Kaika by Alwyn Miller in 1978. It is an ancient and elegant example with a wonderful glossy patina from generations of use. Like many ancient and important New Guinea objects this drum has been given a personal name-Akaru. This piece comes from the collection of Reg and Judy MacDonald and was published in "Oceanic and Indonesian Art" edited by Harry Beran for the Oceanic Art Society in 1998 on page 47. The drum is 29" in height, has one crack with a native wire repair. sold
