This elegant and minimal object has a gruesome function. It comes from the Papuan Gulf and was once used to carry the heads back from slain enemies. The T-shaped carved wood section at the base fit into the severed head in some fashion and the cane loop served as a convenient handle. This one comes from a prominent East Coast collection, is pre-1910, is 15" in height. sold
