This is a classic short-nose, female "lewa" ancestral mask from the tall volcanic Vokeo Island that lies off of the north coast of Papua New Guinea west of the mouth of the Sepik River. Such masks represent the "tangbal" ancestral spirits and are usually danced in male/female pairs—the male has the longer curved nose. This example has a dark aged patina, a full fiber bundle lashed to its perimeter and an old bite stick still attached to the reverse. The mask dates to the 1920s, is 15" in height and sells for $7000. Questions?
