This strong figure comes from the western Papuan Gulf area near the Bamu River. Like many figures from this remote part of the Gulf the piece is fairly flat and nearly two-dimensional. The carved features are in deep relief with traces of white lime to enhance their visual impact. The grin is toothy and self-conscious; the torso is filled with the twisted entrails. The ex-crocodile hunter George Craig field collected this piece in the 1960s-it has his initials painted in white on the figure's reverse. The piece has a nice aged patina and rounded edges, dates to the 1930/40s, is 43" height. sold
