This unusual drum comes from Vokeo Island, one of the Schouten Islands that lie off of Papua New Guinea's north coast west of the mouth of the Sepik River. Vokeo, the largest of the Schouten Islands, is known for smaller hand drums with rounded, bell-shaped bottoms. This example has taken that shape and elaborated it into an ancestral face with the handle carved as a classic long nose. The drum has an aged brown patina, dates to the early 20th century, is 18 ½" in height. sold
