This is an unusual carving probably off of the end of a large slit-gong "garamut" drum. The piece is clearly a pig’s head and shows substantial age and wear. The object was purchased in Wewak on the north coast but I suspect it comes from the Sepik Plains area of New Guinea. Judging from the patina of wear I would say the piece dates to around 1920/30, it is 13 ½" in height and is priced at $1400.
