This is a rare and beautiful dance adze from the Yangoru Boiken area of Papua New Guinea. Such an object would have been slung over the shoulder of an important man during ceremonies or public speeches as a sign of prestige. I have seen two other adzes from the same carver who has a very distinct way of making the birds. The piece has a couple other classic Yangoru ancestral figures carved in relief on the shaft. The adze dates to the 1930s, is 32 ½" in height and sells for $3500. Questions?
