This is a large and old lime spatula from the Collingwood Bay area of Papua New Guinea's Oro Province. I recently field collected the spatula from the border area of Oro and Milne Bay Province (down into the Massim style area). This spatula has the classic rectilinear form and restrained abstract motif of Collingwood Bay material. The spatula is very old with some small breaks around the delicate perforated edge (where shell beads would have been attached in its more illustrious past). The spatula has a drier, less glossy surface than is often encountered because the piece was probably stored in a less protective environment that is sometimes the case. The piece is at least 100 years old, is 20 ½" in height and sells for $2500. Questions?
