While I would like to think that this old Massim figure was ritually used; I know otherwise. I recently field collected this figure in the Cape Vogel area of the Massim region from a very old woman. She was given the piece as a child by her grandfather in the 1930s as a toy. The Massim expert Harry Beran concurs that this is probably an early made-for-sale figure from the Trobriand Islands. While this is not a ritually-used figure I submit it to you as a beautiful piece of early Massim sculpture with approximately 70 years of field use. The piece seems larger than its 13 ½" in height. sold
