Oceanic Art - Image Enlargement
This mask is a classic of both New Guinea and Oceanic art. The orange ochre long-nose masks from the estuary of the Sepik and Ramu Rivers are seen in virtually all museums with collections of Oceanic art. Such masks represented (actually manifested) important, named ancestral spirits who were essential in the well-being of village life. This example shows a smooth early surface, dates to pre-1930, is 23" in height. sold
