This old drum is a very fine example from Vokeo Island, one of the Schouten Islands that lie off of Papua New Guinea's north coast. The drum has a great glossy patina and two well-composed ancestral faces on each side of the handle. As expected in a pre-1920 piece, the ancestral faces have pierced nasal septums. The stylized butterfly pattern on the drum is also very unusual. The piece is 19" in height, dates to the very earliest part of the 20th century. sold
