This old Abelam spear is very unusual for its large, janus ancestral figure. Such spears were held during dances and carried by men while visiting neighboring villages during public ceremonies. The spear is carved from the usual, and very dense, black palm wood. The surface is very old indicating a pre-1920 carving date. The figure is female on one side and unsexed on the other. The spear has strong remains of traditional pigments, is 79 ¾" in length. sold
