This is an ancient and well composed ritual clay pot from either the Southern Abelam or Sunahu Kwanga area. It would have held the white yam soup given to men prior to battle or other important rituals. The figures carved in relief on the side are the classic ancestors in the "hocker" position with pointed headdresses. These ancestors so prominently displayed on the side of the pot reinforce their role in the ritual or event being celebrated. The pot is 8" in height, dates to around 1920. sold
