This old wood plate comes from the Boiken people who live on the southern slopes of the Prince Alexander Mountains as they taper off near the coast above Wewak town. The oldest and best carved Boiken plates seem to come from the area around Sassoya mission station where the present example originates. This plate has a strong design carved in high relief and an ancient encrusted patina. The plate is surely dates to the very beginning of the 20th century if not earlier.
