This Abelam yam headdress is constructed with the coiled technique—I have been inaccurate in calling these items plaited or woven. This is a beautiful old example that is very tightly coiled and has layers of pigments from generations of ceremonial use. These headdress would have been place behind either a wood or similarly coiled yam mask when the Abelam would publicly display and exchange their longest yams. This example is early 20th century, 24” in height and sells for $750. Questions?
