This is a fine older "garamut" slit-gong drum from the Coastal Ramu River area of Papua New Guinea. Each family has a garamut and they are used to pound out signals for both ceremonial and mundane everyday messages. This one is quite old with deeply carved design on the sides and ancestral faces on each terminal. The drum is 64 ½" in length which is small/medium for the area-but a handy size for the home. It dates to around 1930. sold
