This is an old kina shell necklace in its fragile bark wallet from the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Kina shell necklaces such as this were considered items of wealth that are often exchanged. Bark wallets were sometimes made to hold and present the shell. This bark wallet is ancient and exceptional for having a classic figure stitched onto the surface. The bark is very fragile but the figure and the red pigments remain strong. The wallet measures 8 3/4" in length and includes the nice red ochred kina shell necklace inside. sold
