This is an old wood plate from the Boiken culture living on the southern side of the coastal Prince Alexander Mountains. This plate is unusual for its four realistically carved cockatoo birds on the reverse. The patina is a thick, dark chocolate brown and as is often the case there are two aged cracks coming in from the side, most clearly visible on the undecorated interior of the plate. The piece is 17" in diameter, is early 20th century and is priced at $1400. Questions?
