This is an older, classic "lewa" ancestral spirit mask from Vokeo Island, the largest of the volcanic Schouten Islands that lie off of New Guinea's north coast, to the west of the mouth of the Sepik River. Lewa masks are either male with long noses or female with short like this example. This mask dates to around 1920 and shows good age and field use by the multiple layers of paint and the dark brown patina on the reverse. The piece is 14 ¾" in height. sold
