This unusual hardwood headdress comes from the Abelam culture of the Prince Alexander Mountains in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province. Such larger headdresses were worn by men after completing a male initiation. This example has a wonderfully archaic feel to it that contrasts interestingly with the light, airy feel of the openwork. There is one small section on the upper right outer edge that has been restored. The piece is 38 ¾" in height. sold
