This colorful piece is a rare wood "waken" headdress from the Abelam people of the Prince Alexander Mountain range in Papua New Guinea. The headdress was worn behind the head of a new initiate after coming out of seclusion. The main figure is a classic "nggwalndu" or "father's father's man" meaning ancestor. This waken is quite nicely composed and has pleasing remains of pigments. The piece is 37" in height. sold
