This is an old and very fine woven yam mask from the Abelam people of Papua New Guinea’s Prince Alexander Mountains. The three diagnostics one looks for in top-quality yam masks are clearly evident in this piece — it is tightly woven, there is a dark aged patina on the reverse and there are numerous layers of paint that show a long ceremonial life. In addition the mask is well composed and a fine piece of art. Locally these are called "babe mene." This one is early 20th century, 19 ¼" in height. sold
