This female figure from the Nukuma culture of the Washkuk hills is a classic Nogwi sculpture. In this area a man’s thirty-year initiation culminates in the Nogwi ceremony where the last bits of ancestral knowledge are imparted. This piece shows extensive age and field use as evidenced by the pierced septum and ears, the layers of pigments and the encrusted surface. The figure is 45 ½" in height, carved from a hardwood, dates to around 1920. sold
